FORTIFIED is a building method from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) that goes beyond standard building codes. On a roof, the focus is keeping wind and water out and keeping the roof on. That comes down to how the deck is attached, how the deck is sealed, how the edges are secured, and how the work is documented.
This home is part of the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program process, which uses a contractor bid sheet built around FORTIFIED Roof requirements. The existing roof deck needed to be upgraded to meet those requirements, so our crew installed a 1/2-inch OSB overlay across the entire roof and re-nailed it to the rafters with 3-inch ring shank nails. Grant eligibility and amounts vary by homeowner, and insurance discounts for FORTIFIED roofs vary by carrier, so homeowners should confirm details with the program and their insurance agent.
The FORTIFIED designation is not automatic. It requires an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator and IBHS review of the installation documentation. Our on-site project manager captured the required documentation throughout the job, including attic checks for shiners.
A Complete GAF Roofing System
A strong roof is a system, not just a shingle. For this Metairie home, Lone Wolf Roofing installed GAF Timberline HDZ shingles along with compatible GAF components designed to work together at the deck, edges, penetrations, hips, and ridges.
GAF StormGuard leak barrier was installed over the entire roof deck. It is built to keep wind and water out for extended periods if shingles are ever lost. GAF Quick Start starter roll was installed along the eaves and rakes, and Seal-A-Ridge cap shingles finished the hips and ridges.
Timberline HDZ shingles feature GAF’s LayerLock Technology, a large StrikeZone nailing area, and Dura Grip sealant. They meet ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind ratings, pass the UL 2218 impact-resistance test with a Class 3 rating, and include StainGuard Plus algae protection. Installation Details That Matter
Our replacement scope included:
- Removing all existing roofing layers and hauling away all debris
- Installing a 1/2-inch OSB overlay across the entire roof deck to meet FORTIFIED standards
- Re-nailing the entire roof deck to the rafters with 3-inch ring shank nails, nailed every 4 inches up the rafters and marked with a chalk line and spray paint to show the work was done properly
- Installing GAF StormGuard leak barrier over the entire roof deck
- Installing new 26-gauge drip edge around the entire perimeter, nailed every 4 inches
- Installing GAF Quick Start starter roll at the eaves and rakes
- Installing GAF Timberline HDZ Class 3 shingles, with six nails per shingle
- Installing GAF Seal-A-Ridge caps at hips and ridges
- Replacing all pipe jacks and sealing every penetration with silicone and roof cement
- Removing and replacing all roof ventilation with roof-mounted vents that meet TAS 100(A) and are installed to the manufacturer’s high-wind requirements
- Performing final cleanup and a magnet sweep for nails
A dedicated project manager was on site to cover landscaping and contents, monitor safety, check the attic throughout the day, document the installation for FORTIFIED review, communicate with the homeowner and neighbors, and confirm the jobsite was left cleaner than we found it.

A full GAF system installed by a certified contractor may qualify for the GAF System Plus Limited Warranty, which covers manufacturing defects on qualifying GAF products.
