The designation is not automatic. It depends on the installation being documented and reviewed by IBHS through an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator. For this project, Lone Wolf Roofing coordinated permitting, evaluator inspections, and photo documentation, and our project manager captured the required documentation throughout the job. Building a Complete GAF Roofing System
A roof performs best when every layer works together. For this Marrero home, we installed GAF Timberline UHDZ shingles, the premium laminate option in GAF’s Timberline line. UHDZ shingles feature a Dual Shadow Line for added depth and color dimension, along with LayerLock Technology and Dura Grip sealant designed to hold the shingle layers together and resist wind uplift.
UHDZ shingles carry a Class 4 rating under the UL 2218 impact-resistance test when manufactured with GAF’s UltraMat technology and sold in packages bearing the UltraMat logo and Class 4 statement. Hail damage is not covered under GAF’s limited warranty, and insurance discounts depend on the carrier, so homeowners should review their policy and the applicable warranty documents for full terms.
The system on this home included GAF StormGuard leak barrier over the entire roof deck of the main residence, GAF Quick Start starter roll at the eaves and rakes, and GAF Seal-A-Ridge cap shingles at the hips and ridges. A homeowner who installs a qualifying GAF system with a certified contractor may be eligible for GAF’s enhanced warranty coverage, subject to the terms of the specific warranty.
Installation Details That Matter
The roof measurement reports for 2724 Bayou Des Cannes Drive showed approximately 264 linear feet of eaves, 61 feet of rakes, 157 feet of hips, 47 feet of ridges, 31 feet of valleys, and 22 feet of wall flashing across both roofs. - Re-nailing the entire roof deck to the rafters with 2⅜-inch ring shank nails, marked with a chalk line and spray paint so each nail line is visibly documented
- Installing GAF StormGuard leak barrier over the entire roof deck of the main residence
- Installing new 26-gauge drip edge around the perimeter, nailed every 4 inches
- Installing GAF Quick Start starter roll at the eaves and rakes
- Installing GAF Timberline UHDZ Class 4 shingles in Shakewood
- Installing GAF Seal-A-Ridge caps at hips and ridges
- Replacing pipe jacks and sealing all penetrations with silicone and roof cement
- Removing and replacing roof ventilation to meet current code
- Performing final cleanup and a magnet sweep for nails
A dedicated project manager was on site to cover landscaping and contents, monitor safety, check the attic for shiners, document the installation for FORTIFIED review, communicate with the homeowner and neighbors, and confirm the jobsite was left cleaner than we found it.
Protecting the Whole Property
FORTIFIED Roof requirements apply to all roof covers on or attached to the home, so we did not stop at the main house. The detached mother-in-law suite received its own complete GAF Timberline UHDZ Class 4 system, including StormGuard leak barrier at eaves, valleys, penetrations, and other critical areas, premium synthetic underlayment, new starter, matching hip and ridge caps, drip edge, pipe flashings, and ventilation as required. It was installed to the same FORTIFIED standards as the main residence.
Matching the materials and methods across both structures gives the homeowner one consistent roofing system and one set of documentation.
