A Complete GAF Roofing System

The roof deck was protected with two layers of GAF FeltBuster, installed to FORTIFIED standards. GAF StormGuard leak barrier went into the valleys, where water flow is heaviest. GAF Quick Start starter roll was installed along the eaves and rakes, and Seal-A-Ridge cap shingles finished the hips and ridges.
Timberline HDZ shingles feature GAF’s LayerLock Technology, a large StrikeZone nailing area, and Dura Grip sealant. They pass the UL 2218 impact-resistance test with a Class 3 rating and include StainGuard Plus algae protection. Wind, algae, and insurance-discount coverage depend on the exact products, complete system installation, and the homeowner’s carrier, so homeowners should review the applicable warranty documents for full terms.
Installation Details That Matter
Our replacement scope included:
- Removing the existing shingles and hauling away all debris
- Inspecting the roof deck after tear-off and replacing soft or rotten decking when needed
- Re-nailing the entire roof deck to the rafters with 2⅜-inch ring shank nails, nailed every 4 inches up the rafters and marked with a chalk line and spray paint to show the work was done properly
- Installing two layers of GAF FeltBuster over the roof deck per FORTIFIED standards
- Installing GAF StormGuard leak barrier in the valleys
- Installing new 26-gauge drip edge around the entire perimeter, nailed every 4 inches
- Installing GAF Quick Start starter roll at the eaves and rakes
- Installing GAF Timberline HDZ Class 3 shingles with coil nails per FORTIFIED standards
- Installing GAF Seal-A-Ridge caps at hips and ridges
- Replacing all pipe jacks and sealing every penetration with silicone and roof cement
- Removing and replacing all roof ventilation and adding GAF Cobra ridge vent to both the home and the garage
- Performing final cleanup and a magnet sweep for nails
A dedicated project manager was on site to cover landscaping and contents, monitor safety, check the attic throughout the day, document the installation for FORTIFIED review, communicate with the homeowner and neighbors, and confirm the jobsite was left cleaner than we found it.
