FORTIFIED Roofing in Metairie, LA

FORTIFIED isn’t a single roof upgrade. It’s a certification program with three levels, and each one protects against different ways a home can fail during a hurricane or severe storm.

We’re IBHS FORTIFIED certified and install to the requirements at every level, from a roof-focused upgrade to full structural protection.

Real FORTIFIED Experience in Metairie

Lone Wolf Roofing installs FORTIFIED roofing systems in a part of Louisiana where hurricane damage is a real concern. High winds can lift shingles and other roof coverings, exposing the roof deck to wind-driven rain. If windows or doors fail too, pressure can build inside the home and put even more force on the roof and walls.

FORTIFIED is designed around these specific weak points. Depending on the level, it can include a sealed roof deck, stronger fastening, better roof-edge protection, impact-resistant openings, and structural connections from the roof down to the foundation. These upgrades help reduce the ways a home can fail during severe wind and rain.

What FORTIFIED Actually Means

FORTIFIED is a voluntary construction standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, or IBHS. It is based on decades of research into how homes are damaged during hurricanes and severe storms.
The standard goes beyond basic building code and has three levels: FORTIFIED Roof, FORTIFIED Silver, and FORTIFIED Gold. Each level adds protection to another part of the home.

The Three FORTIFIED Levels

Storm damage can spread from one weak point to another. The roof covering may lift first and expose the deck to water. If windows or doors fail, wind can enter the home and increase pressure inside the structure. The three FORTIFIED levels address these risks step by step.

FORTIFIED Roof

FORTIFIED Roof is the starting level and the most common choice for existing homes. It focuses on the roof covering and deck with sealed decking, stronger fastening requirements, and better protection around roof edges and flashing.

If the main roof covering is damaged during a storm, the sealed roof deck provides another layer of protection. This helps keep wind-driven rain from getting through the deck and into the home.

FORTIFIED Silver

FORTIFIED Silver includes everything required at the Roof level, then adds protection to the rest of the building envelope. This includes vulnerable openings such as windows and doors that can fail when hit by flying debris.

Protecting these openings helps keep strong wind from entering the home. That's important because pressure building inside the house can put even more force on the roof and walls.

fortified gold logo

FORTIFIED Gold

FORTIFIED Gold is the highest level. It adds a continuous load path, which connects the roof to the walls, the walls to the floors, and the floors to the foundation.

These connections help the entire structure work together against strong wind instead of relying on individual parts of the building. Gold is usually more practical during new construction or a major remodel because some of these connections are hidden inside walls and other areas that are difficult to reach later.

How FORTIFIED Certification Actually Works

FORTIFIED certification requires more than installing stronger roofing materials. A certified third-party FORTIFIED evaluator must be involved before roofing work begins, not brought in afterward just to inspect the finished roof.
The evaluator checks and documents the required work during the project. IBHS reviews that documentation and, if the home qualifies, issues a FORTIFIED designation certificate with a unique ID tied to the property.
The designation is valid for five years and must later be renewed through re-evaluation. Homeowners can provide the certificate to their insurance company when applying for any FORTIFIED discount they qualify for.

The Financial Incentives, and What We Don't Handle

The designation is valid for five years and must later be renewed through re-evaluation. Homeowners can provide the certificate to their insurance company when applying for any FORTIFIED discount they qualify for.

Insurance Premium Discount

Under Regulation 136, insurers must offer qualifying discounts on the hurricane portion of the premium for FORTIFIED-designated homes. Regulation 136 was promulgated on April 29, 2026, and applies to policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027.

See our Louisiana Roof Insurance Claims page for the full breakdown.

Fortify Homes Program Grant

The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward qualifying FORTIFIED roof work. The grants are awarded through a lottery rather than on a first-come, first-served basis.

Louisiana State Tax Credit

Under Louisiana Act 404, homeowners can claim a nonrefundable state income tax credit equal to 100% of their out-of-pocket cost, up to $10,000, for qualifying FORTIFIED work paid for on or after July 1, 2025.

The credits are issued first-come, first-served and are subject to a statewide annual cap. The program is currently scheduled to end in 2031.

Can You Use More Than One Incentive?

You cannot receive the Fortify Homes Program grant and claim the state tax credit for the same roof. Louisiana also has a separate deduction for certain home retrofit work, but that is different from the FORTIFIED tax credit.

We’re roofers, not tax professionals. We can provide the roofing documents required for the project, but questions about tax eligibility and filing should go to your tax preparer or the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

Recent Developments as of September 2026

FORTIFIED programs in Louisiana continue to change, so application dates, funding, and other requirements are worth checking before making a decision.

These details can change as programs are updated. Homeowners should confirm current requirements with the Louisiana Department of Insurance or IBHS before making a decision based on a specific deadline or amount.

The Best Time to Add FORTIFIED

If you’re already replacing your roof, that’s one of the most practical times to add FORTIFIED protection. The old roofing material is already being removed, which gives us access to the roof deck, fastening, sealed deck system, roof edges, and flashing before the new roof covering goes on.

See our Roof Replacement page for more about adding these improvements during replacement. FORTIFIED can also be added to an existing home as a separate project, but the work may be more limited by what can be reached without opening walls or other parts of the structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Have to Start With FORTIFIED Roof, or Can I Go Straight to Silver or Gold?
Silver includes all the Roof-level requirements, so those requirements cannot be skipped. Gold builds on Silver in the same way, with each level adding another layer of protection.

Yes. A FORTIFIED designation is valid for five years from the date of certification. The property must be evaluated again to renew it and confirm that it still meets the required standard.

Older homes can qualify, especially at the FORTIFIED Roof level during a full roof replacement. Silver and Gold can be harder to complete on an existing home because they may require access to windows, doors, walls, floors, and structural connections. That’s why the higher levels are often easier to complete during new construction or a major remodel.

No. If you receive a grant through the Fortify Homes Program, you cannot also claim the state FORTIFIED tax credit for the same roof.

Because the financial and tax rules can change, talk with a qualified tax professional about which option makes sense for your situation.

No. A regular roof inspection looks for problems such as damaged shingles, failed flashing, leaks, worn materials, or damaged decking.

FORTIFIED certification has a different purpose. It verifies that specific construction requirements were completed, documented by a certified third-party evaluator, and approved through the FORTIFIED process.
