We’ve opened up more attics than we can count where the ridge vent looked fine, but there wasn’t enough soffit intake behind it. When that happens, the vent doesn’t pull fresh air through the attic like it’s supposed to. It pulls cooled or heated air out of your house instead.

What Soffit and Fascia Actually Do

Fascia is the board that runs along the edge of your roofline, right where the roof meets the outer wall. It’s what your gutters attach to. It’s also one of the first things to show damage if water isn’t draining right.
Soffit covers the underside of your roof’s overhang, and its real job is ventilation. Most soffit has small vents built into it that let outside air into the attic. Those vents work together with a ridge or gable vent up top to keep air moving instead of sitting still.

Why Attic Ventilation Actually Matters

Building code requires at least 1 square foot of vent opening for every 150 square feet of attic floor. That opening should be split roughly evenly: half at the soffit vents down low, half at the ridge or gable vents up high.
That balance matters more than the total amount. A ridge vent installed without enough soffit intake to feed it doesn’t just fail to help. It can work against you. Instead of pulling fresh air through the attic, it can pull cooled or heated air out of your home through gaps in the ceiling.
We check both sides of that balance during an inspection, not just whether vents are present.

In our experience, homeowners who replace only one of the three usually end up calling about one of the other two within a few years. A problem in one spot, a drainage issue or a ventilation gap, often shows up as damage somewhere else close by.

How do I know if my soffit ventilation is actually working?
The clearest signs are a hot, stuffy attic even with a ridge vent installed, or visible gaps and damage in the soffit panels themselves. During an inspection, we check whether the air coming in and the air going out are actually balanced, not just whether vents exist.
Not always, but it’s worth checking both at the same time. Damaged fascia can’t hold gutters properly, so what looks like a gutter problem is sometimes really a fascia problem underneath.
Yes, in most cases. Soffit and fascia work is usually its own project, separate from roofing work, unless the damage has spread to the roof deck itself.
