Slidell is an incorporated city in St. Tammany Parish and runs its own municipal permits and zoning. A building permit is required for new construction and may be required for additions, alterations or repairs to an existing building. The rules of Jefferson Parish, Covington, Mandeville and other surrounding communities do not apply within Slidell city limits.
Roofing permits go through the City of Slidell Department of Building Safety. The city’s roofing permit application asks you to state whether the job is a repair or a total re-roof, and whether the property is residential or commercial. It also asks for:
Torch-down or other open-flame work also needs a Fire Prevention Hot Work Permit.
The residential re-roofing permit fee is $3 per $1,000 of job valuation, with a $100 minimum. That means the fee moves with the contract price, so a flat dollar figure would be wrong for most homes.
City building safety inspectors check the decking, fastening pattern and underlayment before and after the roof goes on. Depending on department scheduling, geotagged photos of the decking, underlayment, drip edge, flashing and finished roof may be accepted for verification.
To ask about your project, contact the Department of Building Safety at buildingsafety1@cityofslidell.org or (985) 646-4323. A roof inspection from us is not a permit approval. Before a replacement, ask the city what applies to your address.
