Gretna has two locally designated historic districts. Old Gretna was designated in 1997. Its boundaries run from Gulf Drive and Sixth Street on the west, to Twelfth Street on the south, to Amelia Avenue on the east, with the Mississippi River on the north. McDonoghville was designated in 2005. It runs from Ocean Avenue to Hancock Street, between the river and the Orleans Parish line.
The City’s Historic District Commission is a seven-member volunteer body. Exterior alterations visible from the public right-of-way in these districts, including roofing, require a Certificate of Appropriateness. The owner is responsible for getting it, along with any building permits. Applications go through the Building Department.
Like-for-like repairs and exact material replacements can often be approved administratively through the Building Department. Changes in material or color go to formal Commission review. The design guidelines also say the Commission does not review paint color, ordinary repairs, or standard maintenance that prevents deterioration, damage, or decay.
Which path your roof takes depends on your address and scope. Confirm it with the City before work begins.
